Dear Members of the Ukrainian Genealogy Group - Prince Edward Island,
My name is Amy Larin. I am a graduate student working for the summer with Judy Lee, Library and Archives Canada librarian responsible for the acquisition of genealogical & multicultural publications, on an outreach project with Canadian genealogical publishers. This summer, we are contacting all Canadian genealogical societies to update our publisher database, and inform publishers about the many services we offer.

Library and Archives Canada would appreciate some additional information on your group, including information on any publications. Genealogical publications comprise an important part of our collections, and we appreciate the cooperation of authors and publishers that help us build these collections.

One copy of every publication, in any format, is stored in LAC's preservation collection, where it is kept in a carefully controlled environment and allowed limited use only. The objective is to ensure its availability for future generations. The second copy is available for use in our library or by interlibrary loan.

Legal Deposit:
Legal Deposit is the means by which a comprehensive national collection is gathered together as a record of the nation's published heritage and development. Canadian publishers are required to send two copies of all the books, pamphlets, serial publications, microforms, spoken word sound recordings, videorecordings, electronic publications issued in physical formats (CD-ROM, CD-I, computer diskette, etc.), and one copy of musical sound recordings and multi-media kits they publish, to Library and Archives Canada. As you may know, two copies are required to be deposited when the print run exceeds 100 copies. However, most genealogical publishers issue titles with a very small print run, requiring only one copy for deposit. If your print run is less than 101, we would like to purchase the second copy of your genealogical title. For your convenience, you may wish to send us two copies of each of your publications with an invoice for the second copy specifying the price and print run (please note that you can include postage/handling costs and the GST, if applicable, in the invoice).

Ancestry.com Research Tool now available

The Family History Centre at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons), now has two computers with free access to Ancestry.com. This is an excellent tool to further your genealogy research and provides access to many databases that would cost you $15 per month based on an annual subscription.

The Family History Centre is located at: 10 Northridge Parkway (off St Peter's Road behind the KFC), Charlottetown, PE. Tel 902 566-1013 (you must call ahead to reserve a computer or fiche reader) Hours are Tuesdays 1900h - 2100h and Thursdays 0900h - 1600h.

The new version of Personal Ancestral File (PAF 5) from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is available by download only, at no cost. This is one of the best software packages around and the only one I am aware of that will accept cyrillic letters and print out properly. However, if you are running anything older than WIN98, you should download PAF 4, which unfortunately does not support cyrillic. I understand that WIN95 will work with the drivers, but if you are hesitant, best to stick to the previous version and put your cyrillic notes into a word processor file. Lecture on Monumental Sculptures in "Kalyna Country"

Art / Architectural Historian S. Holyck-Hunchuck will be part of a panel at the upcoming conference of the Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada.

The conference will be held in Charlottetown at the Confederation Centre, running from June 14 - 17.

The panel she will be participating in will be on June 15th, currently scheduled for 0845h (although the schedule is currently being revised).

Her topic is Heritage & Kitsch: The Monumental Sculptures of "Kalyna Country", Alberta.

The presentation looks at 4 different sculptures in Alberta, their history, why they were conceived, the cultural meaning, how thousands of years of history shaped these monuments and how they affect the soul of who we are.

Anyone interested, can come and watch the presentation. Please give me a call for any further information.

I will be sending out a reminder and the final schedule when it is available.

2nd Annual Ukrainian Christmas

Hi folks,

I would like to thank all of you that made the 2nd Annual Ukrainian
Christmas a success!

The food was great, the camaraderie was heartwarming and the only
thing missing was the horiwka from the snow bank, although at first I
thought we had that when I saw the water jugs on the tables!

This Sunday, a few of us are getting together to do a bit of a
postmortem or a lessons learned if you prefer the managerial twist.
This will be an ongoing process, and we will have another meeting
towards the end of February. However, I know this is a short
time-frame, but could we get some feedback from you by tomorrow?
This is what we would like to know:

1) What did you like about the way it was done this year?

2) What changes, improvements would you like to see?

3) Would you like to be on the committee for next years celebration?

Ukrainians overrun PEI

Ukrainians rank 11th in Prince Edward Island, where a total of 600 (100 sr, 500 mr) reside. Nova Scotia is home to 5,760 (1,035 sr, 4,720 mr) Ukrainians giving it a ranking of 14th. Most Ukrainians in Nova Scotia originally immigrated to Cape Breton as miners. Similarly New Brunswick (15th) has 2,355 Ukrainians (305 sr, 2,045 mr), and Newfoundland (20th) is home to 680 (115 sr, 560 mr).

Yuschenko on 60 mins

Viktor Yuschenko, newly elected Orange Party candidate and now President of Ukraine will be interviewed on CBS TVs "60 minutes" (Charlottetown cable 4) on Sunday, Jan. 30, at 8 p.m. AT (NOTE: broadcast may be delayed because of football. Global TV usually carries 60 minutes, although I can't see it on the grid)

A new alternative map site from the EU is availabe and seems to do an good job on Ukraine. Unfortunately it does not follow the Central Rada transliteration completely - h is written as g, and there are other interesting foibles, such as "Я" being written as "ja" instead of "ia" or "Ya" at the beginning of a word.

STRUGGLE FOR INDEPENDENCE (1917-20). The term used to describe the political, military, and diplomatic activities to achieve Ukrainian statehood in all Ukrainian territories. At first this struggle concerned the central Ukrainian territories, which, until 1917, were part of the Russian Empire. Following the February Revolution of 1917, three Ukrainian state formations were established in central Ukraine. On 17 March the Central Rada, headed by Mykhailo Hrushevsky, was created in Kyiv. The state-founding proclamations of the Rada were the four Universals of the Central Rada: the First (23 June 1917) proclaimed Ukrainian autonomy; the Second (16 July) stated the agreement and the reciprocal recognition between the Central Rada and the Provisional Government; the Third (20 November) created the Ukrainian National Republic (UNR); and the Fourth, dated 22 January 1918, declared the independence and sovereignty of the UNR on 25 January 1918. The session of the Central Rada on 29 April 1918 ratified the Constitution of the Ukrainian National Republic and elected Hrushevsky president. That same day, however, a coup d'état was staged with the support of the Germans by conservative circles at the congress of the All-Ukrainian Union of Landowners of Ukraine. Gen Pavlo Skoropadsky was proclaimed hetman of the Ukrainian State, which replaced the UNR. The hetman decreed the 'Laws for the Provisional Regime in Ukraine,' which annulled the previous legal status and all laws of the UNR, and formed the Hetman government.

The Ukrainian political formations that opposed the hetman formed the Ukrainian National Union at the beginning of August 1918 and on 13 November they appointed the Directory of the Ukrainian National Republic, headed by Volodymyr Vynnychenko. Following Pavlo Skoropadsky's 14 November 1918 proclamation of the federation of Ukraine with Russia, the Directory began an anti-hetman uprising that culminated on 14 December in the restoration of the republican rule of the UNR∑

Ukrainian Christmas Carols

I have just received a mailing from Dotcom Recordings that they have a new Christmas CD by the Павана / Pavana Women's Choir entitled Щедрук / Carol of the Bells. They are out of Toronto, you can order on-line or by phone, toll free. I have ordered in the past and they are excellent. They have many other Christmas and other recordings, including some in the old cassette format.
